In 2005 Evan Williams, and Biz Stone had created a podcasting platform called Odeo. This company was doomed once apple released their own platform.
Evan Williams wanted everyone on the team to try and find a new business. Jack Dorsey came up with the initial prototype for Twitter, and the rest is history.
